The Central Coast’s Iris Foundation has distributed some helpful tips for mental wellbeing during the current COVID spike in Greater Sydney.
“The return of lockdowns has also meant an uptick in uncertainty and anxiety for many, especially young people,” the Foundation suggests. “It’s healthy and important to acknowledge the disappointment of holidays, paid work and other opportunities being missed.
“To foster connection in challenging times, resist the temptation to shut down negative talk. Letting yourself and others feel without judgement actually makes strong emotions easier to manage and move through.”

IRIS has also circulated tips about avoiding what it calls “toxic positivity”.
For example, instead of saying “You’ll get over this” say “you’ve been through difficult times before and I believe in you”.
Instead of saying “you’re making a big deal. Look on the bright side.” Try “I know it feels like everything can go wrong. Let’s look at things that could go right.”
