An exhibition that goes behind the scenes of the ABC TV series ‘Cleverman’ is visiting the Gosford Regional Gallery until Sunday, 11 July 2021.
Cleverman is a dystopian science-fiction TV series exploring Aboriginal origin stories in a contemporary context.
The exhibition immerses visitors in the iconic series through an exploration of the storytelling, language and creativity in production design, costumes and props.
Council Director Community and Recreation Services, Julie Vaughan, says the exhibition is both fascinating and thought-provoking.
“Cleverman is a one-of-a-kind TV series and this exhibition takes us deeper into the important themes explored including class, racism and power,” Ms Vaughan says.
“We are given an opportunity to reflect on the importance of First Nations storytelling and explore the incredible pieces featured in the show.”
The Cleverman series was created through a predominantly Indigenous cast and senior crew and premiered on ABC Television in 2016.
Council Administrator, Rik Hart, says the exhibition provides a unique insight into Aboriginal origin stories.
“This exhibition delivers powerful and thought-provoking messages and lets us explore the show’s sets, costumes and props,” Mr Hart says.
“Whether you’ve seen the TV series or not, I’d encourage you to head to the Gallery for this unique and important experience.”
Originally a comic strip, the exhibition provides insights into the creative concepts behind the set and costume design.
At the exhibition opening held on Friday, 21 May, Regional Gallery Director, Mr Tim Brahams said Cleverman was an ACMI touring exhibition assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia Program.
This is a multi-media exhibition with multiple ‘listening posts’ throughout so it is a good idea to take your own earphones so you can ‘plug in’ and listen.
The exhibition is free at Gosford Regional Gallery from Saturday 22 May to Sunday 11 July 2021.
