MORE ABOUT THE MUSICIANS

Magdalena Mira (Vocals)
“Magdalena Mira is an exquisite sounding and feeling singer, with a rare gift for interpreting and communicating songs …” – Lloyd Bradford Syke; Australian Stage Online

Magdalena Mira is one of Australia’s hardest-working singers in the Latin/Jazz fusion world. Chilean-born, currently a resident of the Central Coast, Magdalena is the founder and front person of Afro-Peruvian band MIRA, and a member of the Jazz and Brazilian duo with guitarist Guy Strazz. Her voice, has been described as deeply angelic and wonderfully dark, and has been likened to the tones of Astrud Gilberto and Norah Jones. After taking a hiatus to have 2 children, Magdalena returned full force to performing a year ago and hasn’t looked back. This year, SIMA, who in their own words are “Presenters of exceptional Jazz”, invited Magdalena once again to perform in the Woman’s International Jazz Festival they host, in Sydney. No short feat. She has also featured with her band MIRA, for NIMA (Newcastle’s sister of SIMA). This year Magdalena featured in Terrigal’s first World Music Festival ‘Flavours by the Sea’ – a hugely successful festival hosted by the ‘The Heart Dancers’. Versatile and magnetic, Magdalena features on albums such as the latest Rodric White Album ‘As Beautiful as Day’ for which she performed at the launch at the Foundry616. A dedicated student of music she has completed 2 degrees in Music at the highly prestigious Escuela Moderna de Musica in Santiago, Chile, the place of her birth, and has in addition completed a Bachelor of Music from AIM (Australian Institute of Music) on her arrival in Australia 10 years ago. Throughout her life and musical journey she has absorbed many of the influences and rhythms of her mother Country and Continent (South America) but also draws on her new influence of the English-speaking world in Australia and beyond – a unique quality for a Latin-based singer in Australia. Magdalena is not only a Singer, but a channeller of musical cultures. An exceptionally versatile and talented artist she shines through her heartfelt performances, soulful melodies, and the intricate rhythms she moves between inherant in many songs from her birth Continent. “Chilean singer Magdalena Mira is a captivating and engaging performer with a voice and a presence that lingers long after she’s left the stage”. – Album Launch @ Foundry616

Letter: local Greens helped organise protest

For balance, it would have been helpful to note that, as well as being involved in local actions such as the rally, local Greens groups work hard to ensure that candidates like David Shoebridge, Cate Faehrmann and Sue Higginson are elected - people who have long and excellent track records fighting for koalas and native forests and who have been doing precisely what this participant is suggesting for many years.
