I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment regarding the downsizing of the Newcastle University campus at Ourimbah. As a passionate advocate for education, I feel compelled to share my thoughts on this matter.
The decision to downscale the Ourimbah campus and transfer courses back to Newcastle University has left many of us in the community disheartened. Newcastle University at Ourimbah has played a crucial role in providing accessible higher education opportunities for residents in the Central Coast region. The accessibility of the Ourimbah campus has been instrumental in enabling ‘Coasties’ to pursue higher education without having to relocate or commute long distances.
Furthermore, the reduction of courses, including the discontinuation of the fine art faculty, is disconcerting. These programs not only enriched the cultural and educational fabric of our region but also provided vital career pathways and opportunities for our local talent. The loss of such programs will undoubtedly have a profound impact on our community’s intellectual and artistic vibrancy.
My husband, Michael, dedicated many years of his career to teaching at Gosford TAFE, a campus of the Hunter Institute. We witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by satellite campuses like Ourimbah. These institutions are essential for providing education and skills development to regional communities, and their struggle to maintain course offerings and resources is well-documented.
It is my sincere belief that the Ourimbah campus should not follow a path of reducing courses and opportunities. Instead, it should be strengthened and supported to continue its vital role in providing accessible education for our community. I believe local federal MPs must use their influence and advocacy to compel Newcastle University to reconsider their downsizing decisions and ensure the continued growth and prosperity of the Ourimbah campus.
