Looking for something different to buy for Mum this Mothers’ Day – how about a poetry collection by a local poet with $1 from every book sold donated to help prevent domestic violence on the Central Coast?

Mother’s Song is the first collection of poetry by The Point’s publisher, Jacquelene Pearson. She will be outside Coles Supermarket at West Gosford Village on 6 and 7 May to sell and sign copies of Mother’s Song for a special discount price.

“I’ve written poetry since I was a little girl,” Pearson says. “The poems in Mother’s Song were written between 2000 and 2020 so they definitely explore motherhood, marriage and family along with other themes,” she said.

When Pearson launched the poetry collection last October she made a pledge that $1 from each copy of the book sold would be donated to the Central Coast Domestic Violence Committee Inc (CCDVC).

“The Central Coast has one of the highest rates of family and domestic violence in NSW and that is a terrible and sobering statistic,” she said.

“A couple of years ago I made a conscious decision to devote the remainder of my active years on this earth to writing about environmental justice, social justice and good governance. I intend to spend the remainder of my life carrying the banner against bullying and toxicity and for peace and wellbeing.

“Sadly, there are very few women and girls (and boys and men) who are honestly able to say their lives have been free of gender-based violence. I cannot think of a more important social justice issue to tackle.

“Please come along and have a chat this coming Saturday or Sunday (May 6 and 7). I will be very proud if local families decide to buy a copy of Mother’s Song for their mum and help us fight domestic and family violence.”

Sharon Walsh, Vice President of the CCDVC, spoke at the official launch of the book last year and was asked to write an observation for the book’s back cover.

“Powerful. Mother’s Song is powerful,” she said. “We are taken on a courageous journey of identifying and speaking truth to the impact of trauma…The beauty of allowing yourself to be loved and to feel love, the power of speaking one’s truth, to just one or to many, these defining features of life transcend all else. Mother’s Song tells us so.”

Pearson says she has dedicated the poetry collection to her own mum, grandmother and great grandmother. “I was so lucky to have those three women in my early life,” she says. “Even the piano on the front cover of the book is a tribute to mothers. It was played by my Mumma, Nanna, Mum and I tried to play!all four of us and now by my children.”

Jacquelene Pearson will be on hand to sign copies of the book with a personal greeting just for your mum and each copy will include a card noting funds from book sales will be donated to CCDVC Inc.

Copies will be available for a special Mothers’ Day sale price of $22.
