ACF campaign a sign of growing will for climate action

The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) ‘Together We Can’ campaign is reassuring if you are concerned about the climate crisis but feel overwhelmed and powerless and/or if you’ve been told that no one cares and it’s too late anyway.

If you have made it onto an ACF mailing list you will have read the October 22 email from CEO Kelly O’Shannasy.

“This morning I woke to news that the Morrison Government lobbied the IPCC – the world’s leading authority on climate change – to water down key findings that the world needs to rapidly phase out the use of coal and gas,” the email said.

“I wish I could say I’m shocked, but I’m not.

“It’s one more example in a long list of tragic choices the Morrison Government has made when it comes to protecting Australians from climate damage.

“What will it take for this government to truly accept its duty of care to its citizens and future generations?

“The answer is simple: an undeniable majority of everyday people, businesses and communities saying “time’s up – we demand action”.

“With an election on the horizon and growing pressure at home and overseas to slash climate pollution, now is our moment to demonstrate the overwhelming demand for our government to change course.

“Core to Together We Can is each of us sharing our stories for why we want climate action now.

“By elevating our stories together, we can demonstrate the diversity of community voices demanding action – and inspire others to join with us.

“We’ll take these stories to our decision makers at key moments before the next federal election, telling our leaders that Australians right across the country want to see greater action on climate from our next government.”

The Together We Can website is an impressive community campaign resource but its most valuable and reassuring information is the postcode specific results from the ACF’s climate poll.

Conducted in July 2021, the ACF said the poll was “the biggest and most in-depth poll of climate change opinion in Australia. We polled 15,000 Australians and all 151 federal electorates.”

The results are incredibly reassuring – they show that the vast majority of Australians now want more action on climate. It’s the most statistically valid piece of research I have seen on this topic.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Take a look at the Together We Can website, enter your postcode on the poll results page and if you have a federal local member who accepts money from fossil fuel donors, is a climate denialist or does not believe we need swift and serious action on carbon emissions, send them a copy.

Reprieve for Reef as Katter's Bill fails

The failure of Katter’s Reef Regulation Reversal Bill to gain support in a Queensland Parliamentary Committee is good news for our Great Barrier Reef, the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) says. Members of the Queensland Parliament’s Health and Environment Committee recommended the Bill not be passed. If enacted, the Bill […]
